Sydney, Australia, Friday the 11th of June, 2021.
After a constant lead throughout the week, Mitchell Smith has officially been announced as State Champion, landing him the silverware and a share of the $35,000 purse.
The tournament was a mixed field event, driving both mens and ladies associates from neighbouring states to Moruya Golf Club for a shot at the State Champion title.
The championship featured a tough 3rd hole but sunshine and prime conditions, nonetheless. This didn’t last though, as the weather dramatically changed throughout the 4-day tournament. The half-way point of the championship brought rain, a temperature drop and some challenging conditions but this didn’t stop Queenslander, Mitchell Smith, as he extended his lead by an impressive 9 shots.
Scott Jolly, Member Support Officer of PGA of Australia was pleased with how the tournament went, despite the rain. “We’re thankful that we’ve been able to showcase PGA professional golfers and be that support for golf in Australia.”
After three straight birdies from the third hole, the fourth and final round had the golfing community speculating whether Smith could keep his lead, as Jackson Jubelin was hot on his trail with a birdie to open the round and a 2–shot lead difference.
Smith redeemed himself though, scoring an albatross and carrying himself to a 9-stroke victory and a 4-round total of 7-under.
